Lotus is called "Hasu 蓮" in Japanese. In old days, it was called "Hachisu."
"Hachi (蜂)" means "bee."
"Su(巣)" means "nest."
Because lotus pod looked like a beehive, they say, lotus was named as "Hachisu" meaning "beehive."
Then the word "Hachisu" has become shorten to be "Hasu."
On the other hand, these Chinese spoons are called "Chiri-renge散蓮華" or just "Renge蓮華" in Japanese. "Renge蓮華" literally means "lotus flower" and "Chiri-renge" means "fallen lotus flower." Because this type of spoon resembles a fallen lotus petal, it's called Chiri-renge in Japanese.
Just like "Hachisu" has become shorten to be "hasu", "chiri-renge" has become just "renge."
I think one of the important characteristics of Japanese language is abbreviation. Words are often omitted and individual words have tendency to be shorter.
As you may know, the word "Urabon" has become shorter to be "Bon"
"Kotou-gakko (high school)" has become "Kokou."
This tendency is more prominent in words originated in western languages.
For example,
"Remote controller" has become "Remo-con" in Japanese.
"Air conditioner" has become "Air-con."
"MacDonlad" →"Mac" (in Tokyo) or "Macdo" (in Osaka.)
"Smart phone" → "Sma-pho."
"Brad Pitt" →"Bra-pi."
"around forty year's old" →"ara-four."
"Pocket Monster" →"Pockemon"
"Harry Potter" →"Hari-pota"
"copy and paste" →"copi-pe"
"cost performance" →"Cos-per"
I think this tendency will be more and more standing out in the future......not only in Japanese but also in
English.
Here in
the United States, abbreviations are very common for younger people in texting and chatting.
These are what I have learned.
